This is a project I designed entirely from scratch during my co-op at Werkr Tractors, a large flame-weeding implement that kills young weeds before planted seeds germinate. It was my most complete end-to-end engineering challenge: CAD design, manufacturing, pipeline engineering, and field testing, all in one.
The central design constraint was minimizing welding while maximizing bent sheet metal, reducing cost and simplifying fabrication. The implement uses a forklift propane tank feeding 6 individual burners, each with a spark plug and coil controlled by an Arduino. Stainless steel heat shields contain the flame, increasing efficiency and allowing faster travel speeds.
As a first prototype, I standardized the heat shield geometry with extra bolt holes, keeping all shields identical and eliminating laser-cutting error. Seeing it run in the field for the first time was highly rewarding.
I'm a third-year Systems Design Engineering student at the University of Waterloo, building a foundation in design-for-manufacturing, electronics, and electromechanical problem-solving. This portfolio highlights my experiences across mechanical systems, electronics, and prototyping.
Through three co-op terms at Werkr Tractors, I led the design of a flame-weeding implement, designed my first PCB, rebuilt their website, designed a new implement installing crane, and redesigned the tractor's rollbar for flat-pack shipping. At Accelerated Systems Inc., I diagnosed electric motors, designed waterproof motor controllers, and converted golf carts to electric drive.
Summers at Silver Lake Mennonite Camp keep me grounded, counselling kids, fixing buildings, and pursuing projects like a detailed 3D-printed scale model of the entire camp and an automatic campfire starting system.
My motivation comes from the intersection of functionality and craft. Whether it's a PCB that needs to be debuggable, a rollbar that must ship flat, or a periodic table that excites students about chemistry, I always start from real-world constraints and objectives, and work toward elegant solutions.
I speak English and German fluently, with working proficiency in French. In my free time, I enjoy 3D printing, Ultimate Frisbee, Soccer, and Pyrotechnics.

Zinc-Plated & Installed
After observing how difficult implement swaps were, I designed a front crane allowing a single operator to lift, swing, and hook up implements far more quickly. This was inspired by the Tilmor tractor design.
Built from bent laser-cut sheet metal and MIG-welded, this design was considerably cheaper than metal tubing. A large center cutout reduces weight. A rope-and-crank system handles loads up to 250 lbs.
An FEA study in SolidWorks validated structural integrity before fabrication. The finished crane was zinc-plated for corrosion and rust protection.

In Context on Tractor
Protects the driver, supports the roof, and mounts antennas at the tractor's highest point. Originally designed in metal tubing, I redesigned it with laser-cut bent sheet metal to allow flat-pack shipping, not possible with the welded original.
Three main structural tubes were retained; everything else is laser-cut and subsequently nut-and-bolt assembled. A 3D-printed antenna and WiFi router housing at the rear uses balls and springs to rotate and clear low overhangs, a passive safety mechanism.

Beam Testing Calibration

Beam Testing Rig
This was a competition in our Materials of Deformable Solids (MODs) class, where we designed, used FEA, and tested beams aimed at producing ones with the highest strength-to-weight ratio, with certain size constraints. We won this competition by achieving the highest ratio of 71,000 times the beam's own weight.
After learning that the university's testing equipment was off limits, we decided to build our own testing rig. We designed and welded it out of metal tubing, then used force meters on wrenches for overall estimates before our final design was officially tested with the university's equipment. Our design also needed an incredibly rigid material, thus we used Bambu Lab's PPA-CF Engineering Filament.
After printing and testing numerous beams with 9 different overarching designs, we landed on our final one. This final beam hit all the sizing constraints and took advantage of the fact that the testing rig had angled supports to hold the beam. This meant we could match the beam's lower geometry to match it, converting nearly all the force into compression.

Night View with LEDs
A half-year passion project helping campers and retreat groups understand the layout of Silver Lake Mennonite Camp. Every structure was individually modelled to scale in Onshape and printed on a Bambu Lab X1C. Everything from large buildings, to small ball bins and kayaks was included.
The model consists of nearly 500 printed parts, epoxied lake surfaces, and CNC-routed paths (Scienci LongMill). Buildings lit at night in real life have individual LEDs mounted inside, switchable as a group. Mini campfires light up giving the model an added ambiance.

Elements by Density
A 4-foot interactive periodic table designed as both an art piece and a learning tool for high school classes, aimed at creating excitement around chemistry and visualizing elemental patterns.
Each of the 120 element boxes was individually 3D modelled with a unique symbol designed from scratch. Each box includes a diffusing layer halfway through to evenly spread light from the LEDs behind. The title and LED holes were CNC routed into the plywood backing.
Shown at several schools, the table allows students to visualize properties like melting point, electronegativity, and density through individually controllable, colour-coded LEDs which are controlled by a 3D-printed box housing an Arduino.

Version 1

Version 2
This project started as a cardboard cut-out of a Batman logo, taped to a stick in front of a small flashlight. Once the proof of concept was complete, I was hooked and started designing Version 1 of my bat signal. The flashlight outputted 3000 lumens, and the threaded attachment allowed me to crisply focus the image.
The flashlight I used in version 1, however, was a little flaky, so I switched to a Laser Excited Phosphor (LEP) flashlight. This flashlight technology is superb at shooting great distances, allowing me to shoot this signal for over a kilometre away.
I used this symbol frequently at the summer camp to trick kids into thinking that Batman will show up, or to simply draw their attention away. I decided to print the SOS as a potential emergency signal when camping; luckily, I have not needed to use it yet.

As the autonomous tractor's control box grew more complex, debugging became harder and connections less reliable. I designed a custom PCB to reorganize the wiring, moving away from DIN rail connections and focusing on reliability and debuggability.
This was my first PCB design, mentored by professional electrical engineers. I am proud to say it was a success on the first revision, dramatically simplifying the wiring layout and improving system reliability.
Future-proofed with connections for future controls such as remote e-stops and emergency brakes, the PCB positions the tractor for expanded autonomy features.

Sculpture Alight

Nighttime Centrepiece
I was tasked with designing a sculpture that could bring in the essence of fire for a church. The helical structure, combined with 41 individual candles, gave this 3-foot sculpture an eye-catching effect.
Initially, it was lit in the daytime; however, I knew that at nighttime the candles would really shine, and they did not disappoint. 41 candles burning simultaneously give a lot of light, so one could easily use this for nighttime gatherings.
Finally, to really cap off the magnificence of the sculpture, I added a slowly rotating motor below to spin the entire thing. This allowed people to view all sides of it and see the cool illusion of the candles wandering up the helix.

The box features a folding layout with two stacked boxes per side, allowing easy access to tools while keeping the overall size compact.
The links for the folding-out boxes were 3D printed to ensure accuracy, which allowed the boxes to fold out evenly. The center compartments were designed to perfectly fit certain tools, ensuring they were snug with minimal chance of falling out.
